Andrew and I have a number of photo shoots under our belts - weddings, musicians, friends, clothing companies…blah blah blah. This was our first series with a totally newborn infant, though. And as it so happens, Finley Ella is my cousin’s baby.* I joked with Emily, saying that it was like taking photos of a doll. Em and Ry just bought a house so as they were working out the day’s project, Finley and I had a chance to chat about what she would wear for her photos [and sheesh -was that a tricky decision].
Just four weeks old, Finley is a petite, helpless, adorable, pooping, snuggly, tiny babe and I’m obsessed with her.
The photos I took of Em and Finley are some of my favorites. Never before have I felt so detached from the people I’m taking photos of - but in an amazing way. From behind my camera it was like watching this wonderful snippet of a relationship so complex that I have a hard time wrapping my mind around it. Momma and baby - one dependent upon the other. Emily so in love with a tiny human being who can’t even understand what that love means just yet.
*Early on in Emily’s pregnancy she and I determined that ‘second cousin’ was entirely too removed a term. As Emily and I are close, we decided 'aunt’ was a better title for my relationship to Finley…and that makes me very happy.
